THE STORY BEHIND THE SPECTACLE

How it began

The six-o’clock bell

Sechseläuten takes its name from a change to Zurich’s working day. In the sixteenth century, the guild-dominated city council decided that summer work should end an hour later than in winter. On the first Monday after the spring equinox, a Grossmünster bell rang at six to mark the seasonal change. The name preserves that practical link between daylight, work and spring.

The guilds remain at the heart of the celebration, appearing in historical dress with horses, bands, flowers and flags. The Böögg was a later addition: a snowman-like figure representing winter, placed on a pyre and burned at six in the evening. Local folklore reads the time until its firework-filled head explodes as a prediction of summer weather. It is a cherished ritual, rather than a scientific forecast.

OUTSIDE THE MAIN EVENT

Make time for these

02

Lake Zurich cruise

Choose a sailing from the published seasonal timetable for a gentler view of the city.

Plan the visit
03

Old Town and Lindenhof

Walk the Limmat banks and lanes, then climb to the Lindenhof viewpoint.

Plan the visit

A LITTLE STRUCTURE. PLENTY OF ROOM TO WANDER.

Your short-stay plan

Arrange the festival day around the confirmed programme, then shift the surrounding days to suit your arrival.

01

Saturday by the lake

Arrive and walk the lakefront and old town. Identify Sechseläutenplatz and the published parade route before festival crowds build.

02

Sunday’s festival and art

Choose the children’s parade if included in the programme, or spend part of the day at Kunsthaus. Keep the evening calm for Monday.

03

Monday guild parade and Böögg

Follow the announced guild parade, then reach the burning area with time to spare. The Böögg is traditionally lit at 6pm; respect barriers and official crowd guidance.

04

Tuesday departure

Enjoy a last lakefront coffee before leaving. Add a night for Uetliberg or a longer lake cruise.

JUST BEYOND THE FESTIVAL

Worth the detour

Choose one outing for a short stay. Add another night if you want to explore further at an easy pace.

THE PRACTICAL BIT

Getting there

Airport Zurich (ZRH)

On arrival Take a train from the airport to Zürich Hauptbahnhof, then a tram, walk or taxi to the hotel.

Getting around Central Zurich is walkable, with trams for longer trips. Parade diversions affect the Monday routes; hillside hotels need an onward journey.
