THE STORY BEHIND THE SPECTACLE

How it began

1577: thanksgiving after the plague

Redentore grew from Venice’s vow during the plague of 1575–1577. In September 1576 the Senate chose to build a church dedicated to Christ the Redeemer; Andrea Palladio’s church on Giudecca became the focus of thanksgiving. For the first celebration in 1577, Venetians built a bridge of boats to reach the island and the church that was still under construction.

The temporary crossing remains the festival’s most direct link with that history. It joins the Zattere to Giudecca and preserves the idea of a communal pilgrimage across the water. Today the Saturday-night fireworks and decorated boats give Redentore its spectacular public face, while Sunday worship recalls its devotional origin. Seeing the church and bridge in daylight makes the evening display part of a longer civic story.

A LITTLE STRUCTURE. PLENTY OF ROOM TO WANDER.

Your short-stay plan

Arrange the festival day around the confirmed programme, then shift the surrounding days to suit your arrival.

01

Arrive on Friday

Check in and explore Dorsoduro or the quieter edge of your neighbourhood. Confirm the fireworks viewing sector or booked boat, its meeting point and how you will return after the display.

02

Redentore Saturday

Keep sightseeing light and make time for Giudecca and the votive bridge if officially open. Rest before an early dinner, then reach your reserved viewing arrangement well before access closes.

03

The church and a slower lagoon day

Visit the Redentore church around published worship and opening times, then take a gentle waterfront walk. Avoid overloading the day after the late fireworks; an island excursion can wait for an extended stay.

04

Venice and departure

Enjoy an early final walk or a museum booking that fits your flight. Allow extra time for luggage, footbridges and the water or bus transfer to Marco Polo airport.

JUST BEYOND THE FESTIVAL

Worth the detour

Choose one outing for a short stay. Add another night if you want to explore further at an easy pace.

AN EXTRA REASON TO STAY

Murano or Burano

Extend your stay for a lagoon island trip on scheduled public transport. Give one island enough time rather than rushing both between festival obligations.

THE PRACTICAL BIT

Getting there

Airport Venice Marco Polo (VCE)

On arrival Choose the airport’s Alilaguna waterbus or a private water taxi for suitable hotel landings, or a bus to Piazzale Roma followed by walking or public water transport.

Getting around Walk and use ACTV waterbuses. Festival navigation restrictions and crowd controls affect routes; the island resort depends on its own boat service, which must be checked for the fireworks night.
