Masks, palaces and the quieter side of Carnival
THE REASON TO GO
Venice Carnival rewards an unhurried stay: admire costumes around San Marco, choose events from the official programme and retreat into museums or side streets between busy sessions. Three nights around a Carnival weekend leave time for the city itself. Costume balls and special shows are booked separately.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SPECTACLE
First evidence: 1094 · revival: 1979
The official Carnival history traces its earliest evidence to 1094. Over the centuries, masks, theatre, sweets and festivities in private palaces became part of Venice’s public identity. Carnival belongs to the period before Lent, but its appeal lies equally in the temporary transformation of everyday streets and grand interiors into places for performance and sociability.
The modern festival was revived in 1979 after a long interruption, and today combines historical imagery with a changing programme of contemporary entertainment. Elaborate costumes photographed beside canals are only one expression of it: public events and separately ticketed palace evenings create different experiences. Visit with that distinction in mind. The best short stay leaves room to enjoy the craftsmanship of the costumes and the city’s own history between scheduled performances.

Plan the visitSpend a quieter hour in the northern neighbourhood and try small Venetian bar snacks. Walk away from the most crowded festival routes.
Plan the visitA LITTLE STRUCTURE. PLENTY OF ROOM TO WANDER.
Arrange the festival day around the confirmed programme, then shift the surrounding days to suit your arrival.
Check in and take an early walk around San Marco before a relaxed cicchetti supper. Find the simplest walking route back to your hotel.
Spend the morning looking for costumed participants and official street events. Reserve one major museum for the afternoon; return to the festival when the programme suits you.
Visit the Peggy Guggenheim Collection or wander Cannaregio. Choose another Carnival event rather than assuming every square has a parade.
Enjoy a quiet early walk and depart with time for the boat or bus connection. Heavy luggage and stepped bridges make the last leg slower than a map suggests.
