THE REASON TO GO

Krampus runs

Salzburg’s Krampus season is a collection of individual runs, not one city-wide festival on a fixed date. Choose a published procession first and place a three-night Advent trip around it. Between the bells and carved masks, the Christmas markets, fortress and warm cafés make a rich winter stay.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SPECTACLE

How it began

An Alpine Saint Nicholas tradition

Krampus belongs to an Alpine Advent tradition in which a frightening companion accompanies Saint Nicholas. Regional tourism records these house visits from the seventeenth century: Saint Nicholas brought gifts, while the masked companions represented reprimand and disorder. Groups known as Passen preserve distinctive local practices, costumes and carefully carved masks rather than performing one uniform spectacle across the whole region.

Public runs bring ringing cowbells, fur costumes and horned masks into streets and market settings. Their modern schedules differ between Salzburg neighbourhoods and surrounding towns. Perchten traditions have their own seasonal associations and should not simply be treated as another name for Krampus. Seeing a specifically identified run, with its organiser’s explanation, gives the spectacle cultural context. It also avoids the mistaken idea that every Salzburg visitor on 5 December will encounter the same parade.

OUTSIDE THE MAIN EVENT

Make time for these

01

Hohensalzburg Fortress

Use the funicular and explore the fortress above the city; winter visibility and outdoor footing affect the experience.

Plan the visit
02

Mozart’s birthplace

An indoor counterpoint to the loud outdoor festivities, in the Getreidegasse where Mozart was born.

Plan the visit
03

Salzburg Christkindlmarkt

Visit the cathedral and Residenz squares for traditional Advent stalls. Consult its programme for any scheduled Krampus appearances.

Plan the visit

A LITTLE STRUCTURE. PLENTY OF ROOM TO WANDER.

Your short-stay plan

Arrange the festival day around the confirmed programme, then shift the surrounding days to suit your arrival.

01

Arrive in Advent Salzburg

Settle into a central base and visit the cathedral-square market. Confirm the chosen Krampus run’s location, viewing boundaries and return route; neighbourhood events may be outside the old town.

02

Fortress and the chosen run

Visit Hohensalzburg in daylight, then leave the evening free for the specific published procession. Arrive before the crowd, follow steward instructions and choose a spot where you can step away from the noise.

03

Markets and Mozart

Take a slower morning at Mozart’s birthplace and cafés, then explore the Advent stalls. If another run appears in the programme, treat it as optional rather than assuming an identical experience.

04

A calm departure

Walk by the Salzach or enjoy one final café breakfast. Keep departure flexible in winter weather and add a night if the published run falls awkwardly with your flight.

JUST BEYOND THE FESTIVAL

Worth the detour

Choose one outing for a short stay. Add another night if you want to explore further at an easy pace.

AN EXTRA REASON TO STAY

Hellbrunn Adventzauber

An Advent outing south of the centre, with lights and a market in the palace setting. Check opening days and any separate run programme.

A BASE FOR EVERY KIND OF TRIP

A good hotel changes the trip.

Choose a hotel base to suit your budget and festival plans. Ratings are shown by category, with any seasonal openings and journeys from nearby towns explained below. Availability and rates for your dates have not been checked.

Central Salzburg accommodation does not establish which Krampus run is taking place nearby; match the hotel to a verified future event location.

5-star hotels

01★★★★★

Salzach river · beside the old town

Hotel Sacher Salzburg

5-star · grand hotel & river

Why we would choose it

A verified five-star superior hotel with a central riverside position for markets and a restful return after the procession.

Before you book

A river-view room is a category choice, not a view of a Krampus run. Verify the actual event location.

02★★★★★

Getreidegasse · old town

Hotel Goldener Hirsch, a Luxury Collection Hotel

5-star · heritage & Austrian character

Why we would choose it

A verified five-star superior hotel in the historic core, well placed for Mozart’s birthplace and old-town Advent walks.

Before you book

Vehicle access in the historic centre needs planning. A neighbourhood run may still require a taxi or bus.

4-star hotels

01★★★★

Salzburg · near Mirabell

IMLAUER HOTEL PITTER Salzburg

4-star · traditional city hotel with contemporary comforts

Why we would choose it

A central base near Mirabell supports daytime sightseeing and winter evenings without needing a countryside hotel.

Before you book

The actual Krampus run may take place elsewhere; choose transport using the named organiser’s location and time.

02★★★★

Salzburg · between station and old town

Hotel IMLAUER & Bräu Salzburg

4-star · city hotel with Austrian dining

Why we would choose it

A useful rail-arrival base combines on-site dining with access to the historic centre.

Before you book

The hotel describes a 15–20-minute walk to the old town. A suburban or village Krampus run still requires onward transport.

3-star hotels

01★★★

Salzburg · right-bank old town

Hotel Trumer Stube

3-star · small city hotel with individual rooms

Why we would choose it

An old-town location near Linzer Gasse is convenient for warm breaks between winter walks and city events.

Before you book

Confirm the chosen run’s route and street access; a lively central location may bring evening noise.

02★★★

Salzburg · near Hauptbahnhof

Hotel Hohenstauffen

3-star · family-run traditional city hotel

Why we would choose it

A station-area base is useful for rail arrivals and onward journeys to a specifically announced regional run.

Before you book

The official hotel places the city centre about 1 km away; plan a winter walk or bus and verify the event’s return transport.
