Bells, shaggy Kurents and a small town’s big Carnival
THE REASON TO GO
Kurentovanje turns Ptuj into a meeting place for traditional carnival characters. The bell-wearing Kurents are the stars, but the broader folklore programme deserves time too. Use three nights around the main parade once its day is confirmed, with castle collections and wine adding depth to the stay.

THE MAIN OCCASION
Scenes from past editions: the scale, colour and atmosphere that make the journey worthwhile.
THE STORY BEHIND THE SPECTACLE
An organised Carnival celebrating older rural customs
Kurentovanje brings the region’s older Shrovetide customs into Ptuj’s streets. The Kurent or Korant, wearing a shaggy costume, striking mask and heavy bells, is its best-known figure. The door-to-door rounds of Kurents, recognised by UNESCO in 2017, belong to the communities around the town and are distinct from the modern festival programme itself.
The Carnival gathers these traditions alongside other ethnographic characters, parades and contemporary celebrations. For a visitor, that breadth is part of the appeal: different costumes and performances reveal a shared season of renewal without being interchangeable. Ptuj’s small historic centre creates an intimate setting, but the festival draws large crowds. Watch the organised parade and official encounters, while remembering that the traditions also live in villages and families beyond the event.

Settle in and walk the old centre and Drava riverfront. Pick up the current parade route and programme before planning your festival sessions.
Devote the day to the main parade if scheduled, or the official folklore events. Make time to observe the different traditional characters rather than only photographing the Kurents.
Visit Ptuj Castle and book a cellar tasting if available. Leave the afternoon flexible for more Carnival or a warm pool session.
Enjoy the town before the return transfer. If staying in Rogaška Slatina, account for the road journey rather than treating it as a central Ptuj hotel.
