THE REASON TO GO

Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest combines beer tents, traditional fairground attractions and Munich’s civic rituals on the Theresienwiese. Give two days to the grounds, with a reserved tent session if wanted and an earlier visit to explore the fair. A central Munich hotel lets you balance festival crowds with museums and calmer meals.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SPECTACLE

How it began

Royal wedding celebration: 1810

Oktoberfest grew from the celebrations surrounding the 1810 marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. A horse race held outside Munich helped establish a recurring public occasion, and the grounds took the bride’s name: Theresienwiese, still shortened locally to the Wiesn. The festival’s origin explains why it remains a civic tradition as well as a famous drinking event.

Fairground entertainment appeared early, with a carousel and swings documented in 1818. Over time, small beer stalls developed into large halls, while the festival moved earlier into September to take advantage of milder weather. Its modern scale combines brewery tents and amusement rides with parades and older customs; the historical Oide Wiesn introduced for the bicentenary adds another way to explore that inheritance.

OUTSIDE THE MAIN EVENT

Make time for these

01

Residenz

Explore the former royal palace in a morning interval, with one section chosen rather than a hurried full complex.

Plan the visit
02

English Garden

Use the park for a gentler walk between busy tent sessions.

Plan the visit
03

Deutsches Museum

Choose a science collection that interests you and check current access and exhibitions.

Plan the visit

A LITTLE STRUCTURE. PLENTY OF ROOM TO WANDER.

Your short-stay plan

Arrange the festival day around the confirmed programme, then shift the surrounding days to suit your arrival.

01

Arrive and an evening reconnaissance

Check in and walk the old town. If arrival permits, make an early visit to the grounds for orientation; do not depend on an unreserved evening tent seat.

02

Your main Wiesn session

Go early to explore the fairground and traditional attractions, then attend your booked tent session. Reserve through the tent operator and follow its arrival and consumption conditions.

03

A second festival visit and a quieter Munich interval

Return for the parts of the grounds you missed. If choosing the opening weekend, use the official parade timetable; otherwise make time for a museum or the English Garden before another short visit.

04

Departure

Have breakfast and leave a comfortable airport margin. Add a night for a Bavarian excursion rather than losing one of the two festival days.

JUST BEYOND THE FESTIVAL

Worth the detour

Choose one outing for a short stay. Add another night if you want to explore further at an easy pace.

AN EXTRA REASON TO STAY

Nymphenburg Palace

The palace and gardens make a manageable outing beyond the old town on an extra half-day.

THE PRACTICAL BIT

Getting there

Airport Munich Airport (MUC).

On arrival S-Bahn lines S1 and S8 connect the airport with central Munich; compare the stop nearest your hotel and allow extra time for luggage and connections.

Getting around Walk or use Munich public transport to reach the Theresienwiese area. Nearby stations and routes can be very crowded; follow official arrival guidance and leave time after a tent session.
