THE REASON TO GO

Festas de Santo António

Lisbon’s Santo António celebrations peak on the night of 12 June, with popular marches on Avenida da Liberdade and neighbourhood arraiais spilling into the streets. On 13 June, the religious procession adds another dimension. Build the break around those two days, keeping hill walks and museum visits for the quieter hours.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SPECTACLE

How it began

Popular marches established in 1932

Lisbon’s June celebrations combine devotion to Santo António with neighbourhood festivities. The saint is especially beloved in the city, where he was born, and is popularly associated with matchmaking; Saint Vincent remains Lisbon’s patron saint. The 13 June religious procession and the night-before parties express different parts of that attachment, from church observance to shared meals and music in streets and squares.

The competitive Marchas Populares took their modern form in 1932 through the initiative of Leitão de Barros. Neighbourhood groups developed costumes, songs and choreography into a public display of local pride. The municipal Santo António weddings, first held in 1958, added another civic tradition. Today the marches on Avenida da Liberdade sit alongside smaller arraiais, making the festival both a citywide production and a celebration organised close to home.

OUTSIDE THE MAIN EVENT

Make time for these

01

Santo António museum and church

Learn why the saint means so much to Lisbon in the small museum beside his church, near the cathedral.

Plan the visit
02

Castelo de São Jorge

Reserve a quieter morning for the castle and views over the city. Expect an uphill approach or arrange transport to reduce the climb.

Plan the visit
03

Museum of Fado

Put the music heard around Alfama into context through the museum’s performers, instruments and recordings. Check opening days.

Plan the visit

A LITTLE STRUCTURE. PLENTY OF ROOM TO WANDER.

Your short-stay plan

Arrange the festival day around the confirmed programme, then shift the surrounding days to suit your arrival.

01

Arrive and read the city

Settle near the centre and walk the riverfront or Chiado. Visit the Santo António museum if timing allows, then identify a walkable route home from your chosen neighbourhood party.

02

The night of Santo António

Keep 12 June light until the evening. Choose between the popular marches on Avenida da Liberdade and an arraial in the old neighbourhoods; do not expect to cross the crowded city quickly. Eat sardines and stay for the music.

03

The saint’s day, slowly

Take a late breakfast after the party. Visit the castle or Fado Museum, then follow the official 13 June procession details if you want the devotional side of the celebrations.

04

Coffee before departure

Leave time for the airport transfer and avoid an ambitious hill walk with luggage. Add a night for Sintra or Belém if you want a broader Lisbon trip.

JUST BEYOND THE FESTIVAL

Worth the detour

Choose one outing for a short stay. Add another night if you want to explore further at an easy pace.

AN EXTRA REASON TO STAY

Sintra

Add a separate day or another night for Sintra’s palaces and landscape. Reserve timed monument entries and local transport; it competes with the main celebration if squeezed into 12–13 June.

THE PRACTICAL BIT

Getting there

Airport Lisbon Humberto Delgado (LIS)

On arrival Use the airport Metro with the appropriate change for your hotel, or a taxi / booked transfer. Confirm where vehicles can stop near old-town accommodation.

Getting around Walk between nearby neighbourhoods, allowing for hills. Parade and party closures can disrupt trams, buses and taxis on 12–13 June; check the current notices.
