THE MAIN OCCASION
Scenes from past editions: the scale, colour and atmosphere that make the journey worthwhile.
THE STORY BEHIND THE SPECTACLE
A post-war beginning: 1947
Bloemencorso Bollenstreek began in 1947, soon after the Second World War. People wanted to celebrate freedom and renewal, and the bulb-growing region found its material close at hand: spring flowers. The parade developed as a communal display of what the area produced, using decorated vehicles to bring horticultural skill and regional pride into the streets.
That local foundation still matters. Volunteers build the float structures and attach flowers to turn designs into large moving artworks. Hyacinths, tulips and other spring blooms connect the spectacle to the landscape through which it travels. The route now links Noordwijk with Haarlem, where the finished floats can also be admired at close range after the procession. Its heritage value lies in shared craftsmanship as much as its colour.
OUTSIDE THE MAIN EVENT
Art and science meet in Haarlem’s historic museum rooms; a good weather-proof arrival-day visit.
Plan the visitSee Haarlem’s painting tradition, including the museum’s major Frans Hals collection.
Plan the visitReserve a separate spring garden visit and its transport; do not combine it with chasing the parade.
Plan the visitA LITTLE STRUCTURE. PLENTY OF ROOM TO WANDER.
Arrange the festival day around the confirmed programme, then shift the surrounding days to suit your arrival.
Check in and explore the Spaarne and Grote Markt. Visit Teylers if arrival time allows; settle your transport to the chosen parade viewing point.
Spend the day around one point on the published Noordwijk–Haarlem route. Avoid chasing the floats; return to Haarlem for the evening arrival if timings suit.
See the stationary floats in Haarlem, subject to the announced exhibition arrangements. Use the rest of the day for the Frans Hals Museum and a leisurely lunch.
Leave after breakfast. Add a night for an unhurried Keukenhof visit and the coast, or swap a museum session for a prebooked garden outing.
JUST BEYOND THE FESTIVAL
Choose one outing for a short stay. Add another night if you want to explore further at an easy pace.
