Scenes from past editions: the scale, colour and atmosphere that make the journey worthwhile.
THE STORY BEHIND THE SPECTACLE
Roots: 1954 · street parade: 1979
The Flower Festival’s roots lie in the Festa da Rosa organised by Funchal’s Ateneu Comercial in 1954. A celebration of cultivated flowers gradually grew into a much larger tribute to spring. In 1979, the regional tourism authority brought the festival into the streets, establishing the form that made it one of Madeira’s signature occasions.
The Flower Parade combines elaborate floral floats with dancers in flower-inspired costumes. Elsewhere, flower carpets and displays bring the island’s gardens into the city, while children add blooms to the Wall of Hope as a gesture towards a better world. It is worth seeing these quieter details as well as the main procession: they explain why flowers, renewal and community belong at the centre of the celebration.
