THE STORY BEHIND THE SPECTACLE

How it began

Roots: 1954 · street parade: 1979

The Flower Festival’s roots lie in the Festa da Rosa organised by Funchal’s Ateneu Comercial in 1954. A celebration of cultivated flowers gradually grew into a much larger tribute to spring. In 1979, the regional tourism authority brought the festival into the streets, establishing the form that made it one of Madeira’s signature occasions.

The Flower Parade combines elaborate floral floats with dancers in flower-inspired costumes. Elsewhere, flower carpets and displays bring the island’s gardens into the city, while children add blooms to the Wall of Hope as a gesture towards a better world. It is worth seeing these quieter details as well as the main procession: they explain why flowers, renewal and community belong at the centre of the celebration.

OUTSIDE THE MAIN EVENT

01

Monte Palace Tropical Garden

An atmospheric mix of planting, water features and art above Funchal. Make this a half-day rather than a hurried stop.

Plan the visit
03

A hotel afternoon

This is a trip where downtime earns its place. Leave room for a pool, garden walk or afternoon tea rather than filling every hour.

Plan the visit

A LITTLE STRUCTURE. PLENTY OF ROOM TO WANDER.

Your short-stay plan

Arrange the festival day around the confirmed programme, then shift the surrounding days to suit your arrival.

01

Arrive above the Atlantic

Check in and settle into the island pace. Take a short waterfront or old-town walk and leave the bigger sightseeing for tomorrow.

02

Gardens in Monte

Spend a morning at Monte Palace’s tropical garden, then return to Funchal for floral displays. Allow for steep slopes and choose transport to suit your walking comfort.

03

The Flower Parade

Keep 2 May 2027 dedicated to the main procession. Decide between ticketed seating and public viewing after checking the final route and access information.

04

A south-coast outing

Combine Câmara de Lobos with Cabo Girão, leaving the afternoon for the hotel pool, spa or a long lunch.

05

A gentle departure

Enjoy breakfast and a final sea view. For a levada walk or the mountain scenery, add another day and choose a route according to current weather and access advice.

JUST BEYOND THE FESTIVAL

Worth the detour

Choose one outing for a short stay. Add another night if you want to explore further at an easy pace.
