THE REASON TO GO

Fête des Remparts

Dinan’s timbered lanes and stone walls become the setting for the Fête des Remparts. Give both festival days to performances, historical camps and craft demonstrations; a short river walk offers breathing space between the busiest sessions. A Dinan base makes the late return simplest.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SPECTACLE

How it began

Founded in 1983

The Fête des Remparts began in 1983, using Dinan’s unusually intact medieval town as the stage for a modern celebration of the Middle Ages. Its appeal comes from the fit between place and performance: half-timbered houses, gates and stone defences provide a real setting for historical costumes, craft demonstrations and equestrian spectacle, rather than a purpose-built festival backdrop.

The event developed into a biennial gathering of historical companies, artisans and performers. Its organisers describe a commitment to making history tangible through living performance, reconstruction and experimental archaeology. That matters to a visit: the pleasure lies as much in watching work and conversation in a camp or workshop as in a large tournament, with the whole town contributing to the atmosphere.

OUTSIDE THE MAIN EVENT

Make time for these

01

Château and ramparts

Explore the defensive architecture that gives the festival its natural setting; check which sections remain accessible during events.

02

Walk the steep cobbled route from the historic centre to the Rance, with time for the climb back.

03

Léhon abbey walk

Follow the tourism-board walking route towards the abbey for a quieter stretch of river scenery.

A LITTLE STRUCTURE. PLENTY OF ROOM TO WANDER.

Your short-stay plan

Arrange the festival day around the confirmed programme, then shift the surrounding days to suit your arrival.

01

Arrive inside the walls

Arrive on Friday, check the festival map and collect any tickets. Walk the old town and find an uncomplicated dinner before the medieval weekend begins.

02

The medieval town in full swing

Dedicate Saturday to the official programme: historical camps, crafts and street performances. Book any separately ticketed show and leave time to move through crowded lanes.

03

Tournament and river breathing space

Keep Sunday for the festival’s remaining performances and your chosen equestrian show if programmed. Between sessions, descend Rue du Jerzual to the port; save the longer Léhon walk for another trip if the timetable is full.

04

A gentle departure

Have breakfast, enjoy a last look at the walls and depart on Monday. Coastal excursions work best as an extra night rather than replacing a festival day.

JUST BEYOND THE FESTIVAL

Worth the detour

Choose one outing for a short stay. Add another night if you want to explore further at an easy pace.

AN EXTRA REASON TO STAY

Saint-Malo

Walk the corsair city’s walls and Sillon beach before or after the festival. This is a separate coastal outing, easiest with a car or a planned transfer.

A BASE FOR EVERY KIND OF TRIP

A good hotel changes the trip.

Choose a hotel base to suit your budget and festival plans. Ratings are shown by category, with any seasonal openings and journeys from nearby towns explained below. Availability and rates for your dates have not been checked.

The second verified four-star option is in Saint-Malo and requires road transfers; the Dinan three-star choices are more convenient for festival evenings.

Le d’Avaugour was excluded because an older tourism listing says four stars while its current official sitemap says three stars.

THE PRACTICAL BIT

Getting there

On arrival Continue by prebooked road transfer or a checked rail connection via Rennes and the regional network. Dinan station is outside the walled centre; allow the final walk or taxi.
