Courtyard flowers and a city of layered history
THE REASON TO GO
Fiesta de los Patios is an invitation into residents’ flower-filled courtyards. Split your visits across morning and evening opening sessions, leave the hot middle of the day for lunch and rest, and give the Mosque-Cathedral its own unhurried visit. This is a lived-in city, so patience and courtesy matter as much as a route map.
The historic centre or its western edge makes the patio routes walkable.
Choose dates only after the annual competition schedule is published.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SPECTACLE
Competition since 1921 · UNESCO recognition 2012
Córdoba’s patios answer an old practical need: shade, ventilation and a shared open space in a hot, dry climate. Courtyard houses developed through the city’s Roman and Islamic past, with wells or fountains and rooms arranged around the interior. Flowers added beauty to places already central to everyday domestic life. The festival therefore celebrates a way of living as well as a horticultural display.
The municipal patio competition began in 1921, bringing these private spaces into a public celebration. Residents care for plants, pots and whitewashed walls, then open their doors during the May festival. UNESCO recognised the Fiesta de los Patios in 2012. That recognition concerns the community tradition and exchange between neighbours and visitors, not simply attractive buildings: the hosts’ continuing work is what keeps the courtyards alive.
OUTSIDE THE MAIN EVENT
Book through the monument’s official website and allow time to understand both the mosque and cathedral within this extraordinary building.
Plan the visitVisit a curated sequence of twelve patios and the historic house. Its set opening hours make a useful anchor between the festival’s residential courtyards.
Plan the visitWalk across the Roman Bridge for a view back to the Mosque-Cathedral, then return through the old town. Early morning or evening makes a gentler circuit in May’s warmth.
Plan the visitA LITTLE STRUCTURE. PLENTY OF ROOM TO WANDER.
Arrange the festival day around the confirmed programme, then shift the surrounding days to suit your arrival.
Settle near the historic centre. Take a twilight walk around the Roman Bridge and collect the current patio map; choose a compact route instead of trying to see every courtyard.
Visit one neighbourhood during the morning session. Pause for lunch and a rest, then return for different courtyards in the evening. Expect queues and let residents set the pace.
Reserve the Mosque-Cathedral for the morning. Use the afternoon for Palacio de Viana’s courtyards or another patio route, according to opening days and your energy.
Leave after breakfast, with time to reach the railway station. Medina Azahara deserves a separate half-day or an extra night rather than a rushed stop en route.
JUST BEYOND THE FESTIVAL
Choose one outing for a short stay. Add another night if you want to explore further at an easy pace.
