Renaissance theatre in a river-bend town
THE REASON TO GO
The Five-Petalled Rose Festival fills Český Krumlov with Renaissance dress, historical parades, crafts and performance. Stay for the whole weekend rather than arriving on a day tour: the evening programme is part of the appeal. A four-night stay gives you a travel buffer and a quieter day for the castle and river streets.
Stay inside the historic centre for the evening programme.
Both 2027 and 2028 festival weekends are published by the organiser.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SPECTACLE
First modern festival 1968 · revived 1990
Český Krumlov’s Five-Petalled Rose Festival uses the emblem of the Rožmberk, or Rosenberg, family to recall the town’s Renaissance past. Its modern history began in 1968, when local cultural organisers staged a celebration of that heritage. Editions followed in 1969 and 1970 before the event disappeared for years. The festival is therefore a modern historical celebration, not an uninterrupted Renaissance survival.
The festivities returned in 1990 and became an annual part of the town’s cultural life. Residents, ensembles, institutions and craftspeople turn the historic centre into a stage, with costumes, music, fencing and processions giving shape to different episodes from the Rosenberg period. Each edition can choose a particular historical theme. The preserved town supplies the setting, while the work of today’s community makes that history visible for a weekend.

Allow most of the day for ground travel, check in and take an evening walk beside the Vltava. Confirm tickets, access points and the published performance map.
Start with a reserved castle visit or the gardens, then join the opening-day programme. Leave space for the evening rather than exhausting yourself on arrival.
Build Saturday around the main historical procession and the performances that appeal to you. Break for a sit-down meal and return for the evening programme; use that year’s schedule rather than assuming past timings.
See any remaining festival events, with the monasteries or Egon Schiele Art Centrum as a quieter change of pace. Enjoy the town after the peak crowds begin to ease.
Leave after breakfast, keeping generous time for the Prague connection or airport transfer. Add a separate half-day for Zlatá Koruna if staying longer.
