THE STORY BEHIND THE SPECTACLE
1932: Bayonne creates its own fêtes
Bayonne’s city history credits former Aviron Bayonnais rugby players with creating the Fêtes in 1932. The celebration drew inspiration from neighbouring Pamplona while developing its own Basque and Gascon character. Its name remains Fêtes rather than feria, and the gathering centres on shared music, dancing and the transformation of ordinary streets into places of public celebration.
The connection with Pamplona also appears in the official parade, a tradition that followed the cities’ twinning in 1960. Today bandas, Basque dances and the figure of King Léon give the event a recognisable local language. White clothes and red accessories signal participation, while the Nive quays, bridges and compact old town shape the experience: the festival is felt by moving through Bayonne, as much as by attending any single performance.
OUTSIDE THE MAIN EVENT
Give the festivities context with a visit to the museum of Basque life and Bayonne history in Maison Dagourette.
Plan the visitExplore the Gothic cathedral quarter in a quieter morning window; check access during services.
Plan the visitWalk Grand and Petit Bayonne, pause for local chocolate or ham, and return for the bandas when the streets come alive.
Plan the visitA LITTLE STRUCTURE. PLENTY OF ROOM TO WANDER.
Arrange the festival day around the confirmed programme, then shift the surrounding days to suit your arrival.
Check in, walk the Nive banks and find the main festival access points. If staying in Biarritz, confirm the special bus stop and late return before heading into Bayonne for music.
Visit the Musée Basque if holiday opening allows, then follow the programme for bandas and traditional dancing. Eat before peak evening crowds and choose one area for the night rather than repeatedly crossing town.
Spend the morning beside Biarritz’s Grande Plage, return to rest and take the planned transport to Bayonne. Leave room for street music and a leisurely meal, keeping your return departure fixed.
Walk the cathedral quarter or the coast before checkout. If departing on the festival’s final day, allow for continuing celebrations and transport diversions.
