THE STORY BEHIND THE SPECTACLE

How it began

Origins: 1860 · named in 1925

The Fête du Lac grew from the lavish Venetian-style lake festivities held for Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie on 29 August 1860, after Savoie became part of France. Illuminated boats and fireworks made the imperial visit memorable, building on an older local tradition of waterborne spectacles for visiting rulers.

The celebration developed gradually rather than running unchanged every year from 1860. A dedicated night show emerged in 1924, and the festival committee gave it the name Fête du Lac in 1925. Music, light and water effects now join the fireworks, but the essential idea remains the same: the lake becomes the stage, with reflections and surrounding mountains giving the performance its setting.

Western-shore cycling

Pick a comfortable section of the greenway. The complete lake circuit includes hillier road sections on the east; it is not uniformly flat or traffic-free.

Plan the visit

A LITTLE STRUCTURE. PLENTY OF ROOM TO WANDER.

Your short-stay plan

Arrange the festival day around the confirmed programme, then shift the surrounding days to suit your arrival.

01

Old-town arrival

Start with Annecy’s canals and lakeside paths, then a leisurely dinner. If staying outside the town, confirm tomorrow’s transport while checking in.

02

The lake spectacle

Keep the daytime relaxed. Attend the Fête du Lac in the evening; choose official seating or a permitted viewing area after the programme is published.

03

A lake day

Take a lake cruise or cycle an easy stretch of the western greenway. Add a lakeside lunch in Talloires if your route and transport allow.

04

Breakfast and home

Leave time for a final swim if conditions and local guidance suit, or a quiet lakeside walk before departure.

JUST BEYOND THE FESTIVAL
