Sculptures, summer heat and the final burning
THE REASON TO GO
Alicante’s Hogueras de San Juan puts satirical monuments across the city before their burning late on 24 June. A four-night stay lets you see the art, give the beach and castle their own mornings, and remain for the finale. Choose a hotel you can reach on foot after the cremà and protect the following morning from an early departure.
Central Alicante is the practical base for a walking return after the cremà.
Stay for the burning late on 24 June.

Scenes from past editions: the scale, colour and atmosphere that make the journey worthwhile.
THE STORY BEHIND THE SPECTACLE
Modern Hogueras founded in 1928
Alicante already had a tradition of midsummer bonfires when José María Py and the Alicante Atracción association proposed a new organised celebration in 1928. Drawing inspiration from Valencia’s Fallas, the first official Hogueras combined crafted monuments with the local fire tradition. Alicante’s municipal archive records that founding year, and the festival museum explains how a summer custom became a civic celebration with its own artistic identity.
Neighbourhood commissions now spend the year preparing satirical sculptures, music and community celebrations. The monuments are installed to be admired and judged before the cremà on 24 June brings their brief public life to an end. Some figures escape the flames and enter the museum’s record of changing tastes and craftsmanship. Visitors therefore see both an ephemeral art exhibition and a shared ritual: the burning is the conclusion of months of local work.
OUTSIDE THE MAIN EVENT
Explore the fortress and city views in the cooler morning. Check the lift and access arrangements rather than committing to a hot uphill climb.
Plan the visitPut the temporary monuments into context through the city’s museum devoted to the festival and its saved figures. Check current opening hours.
Plan the visitConnect the lanes of Santa Cruz with the harbour and Postiguet beach for a quieter city circuit between festival sessions.
Plan the visitA LITTLE STRUCTURE. PLENTY OF ROOM TO WANDER.
Arrange the festival day around the confirmed programme, then shift the surrounding days to suit your arrival.
Settle near the old town and take a first evening circuit of nearby hogueras. Use the current map and choose a few monuments to revisit with more time.
Go to Santa Bárbara Castle in the cooler morning, then pause through the hottest hours. Spend the evening with the sculptures and scheduled parades, keeping room for spontaneous neighbourhood atmosphere.
Visit the central market if open and walk the seafront or Postiguet beach. Return to the monuments after your rest; learn about the festival at the Museu de Fogueres if its current schedule fits.
Keep 24 June flexible and choose an authorised viewing area for the burning. Follow barriers and safety directions, expect smoke and very loud fireworks, and walk back only when your route is open.
Choose a later flight after the late finale, or add a recovery night. A trip to Tabarca needs its own day and weather-dependent boat plan.
JUST BEYOND THE FESTIVAL
Choose one outing for a short stay. Add another night if you want to explore further at an easy pace.
