Alba / Langhe

White truffles and autumn vineyard country

Marché aux truffes blanches d'Alba

THE REASON TO GO

International Alba White Truffle Fair

The Alba White Truffle Fair is an autumn food weekend built around the market, sensory sessions and the wider programme. Give Saturday and Sunday to Alba, then use a separate day for the Langhe hills. The two five-star hotel choices are outside town, so a driver or carefully planned car journey is part of the stay.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SPECTACLE

How it began

Fair founded in 1929

Alba’s truffle fair was founded in 1929 through the initiative of Giacomo Morra, who recognised that the local white truffle could help introduce the town and its food to a wider world. His work connected a seasonal product with hospitality and promotion, establishing an autumn occasion whose identity rests on the relationship between Alba, its markets and the surrounding Piedmont countryside.

The fair has grown into a broad programme of gastronomy, sensory education and local celebration. Its formal international recognition came in 2007, while the White Truffle World Market remains its centre of gravity. Wine, cooking and folklore give visitors several ways into the region, but the appeal remains seasonal: an autumn gathering shaped by the truffle harvest and the people who know this landscape.

OUTSIDE THE MAIN EVENT

Make time for these

01

Cathedral of San Lorenzo

Visit Alba’s cathedral and the Piazza del Duomo area between fair sessions. Check access around services and book any guided bell-tower visit separately.

Plan the visit
02

Alba Underground

Reserve a guided route beneath the city for a different view of Alba between food events.

Plan the visit
03

Grinzane Cavour Castle

Visit the Langhe Museum and the In Vigna open-air route to connect food, landscape and wine history.

Plan the visit

A LITTLE STRUCTURE. PLENTY OF ROOM TO WANDER.

Your short-stay plan

Arrange the festival day around the confirmed programme, then shift the surrounding days to suit your arrival.

01

Arrive in the Langhe

Settle into your hotel, confirm transport to Alba and reserve a simple dinner. Keep the arrival day free of tastings that require a tight connection.

02

Alba and the first fair session

Choose a stay that includes Saturday and Sunday. Begin with the old town, then attend a booked fair tasting or cooking event if offered in the published programme.

03

The white-truffle market

Give the market a generous morning and ask questions before purchasing. Build lunch around local cooking; use the afternoon for another scheduled session rather than a rushed vineyard drive.

04

Langhe vineyards and a castle

Spend the additional day around Grinzane Cavour or Barolo, with a booked cellar visit and a driver for wine tasting. Swap this day with arrival-side sightseeing to preserve both fair weekend days.

05

Departure through the hills

Have breakfast and depart with a generous airport or rail margin. Autumn hill roads and airport distances reward a calm schedule.

JUST BEYOND THE FESTIVAL

Worth the detour

Choose one outing for a short stay. Add another night if you want to explore further at an easy pace.

AN EXTRA REASON TO STAY

Barolo and WiMu

Add a wine-focused village visit and the museum in the castle; book cellar appointments independently.

THE PRACTICAL BIT

Getting there

Airport Turin Airport (TRN) is a practical gateway; compare Milan options against the longer onward journey.

On arrival The airport rail network links Turin and onward destinations including Alba; check the exact connection. A hire car or private transfer is useful for the countryside hotels.

Getting around Alba’s fair and old town are walkable. Langhe villages, cellar appointments and both hotel recommendations need planned road transport; use a driver for wine-tasting days.
